24 Hours in Manchester: Makeup, Style and Gluten Free Food

J bought me tickets to see Shrek the Musical at the Palace Theatre in Manchester as a Christmas present, so we decided to book a hotel and make a little city break out of it.

We stayed at a premier inn near the theatre, did some shopping, watched the show, had some great (maybe not so healthy) gluten and dairy free food and then headed to Old Trafford for the stadium tour (J’s part of the deal)!

I thought I’d share with you the makeup I used, clothes I wore and food I ate during 24-hours in Manchester as well as a little review of everything we got up to!

Makeup

I love going to the theatre and I love to get dressed up and make an effort when I get chance to go, so I decided to go quite glam with my makeup!

Below are the products I used for the look:

  • NYX Photo Ready Primer – Green
  • B by Superdrug Liquid Illuminator
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid
  • Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
  • Urban Decay Naked Concealer
  • Anastasia Cream Contour Kit
  • Rimmel Stay Matte Powder
  • MAC Mineralise Skin Finish Powder – Give Me Sun
  • Illamasqua Beyond Powder – OMG
  • Fleur De Force Brow Powder
  • MAC Studio Fix Concealer
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • MAC Painterly Paint Pot
  • Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette
  • Violet Voss Holy Grail Palette
  • Tanya Burr Cosmetics Selfie Lash Mascara
  • MAC Blankety Lipstick
  • Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

I did my makeup pretty much the same next day but used the No7 Beautifully Matte foundation instead of the MAC one as I like that for daily wear.

Fashion

Like I said before, I wanted to get dressed up for the theatre but for me, dressing up is jeans and heels, so here is the look I wore for the show:

Jacket – Ted Baker

Black Cami Top – Matalan

Jeans – Next

Heels – Primark

Clutch Bag – Dorothy Perkins

Bracelet – Monica Vinader

Rings – Pandora

For the stadium tour, I wanted to be comfy and it was raining, so being warm and dry was important too!

This outfit is pretty standard for me:

I had the same next jeans on, a plain black top for Victoria’s Secret, white Converse, my black coat is Zara, scarf is Boohoo and the jewellery is all the same!

Food

Many of you will know that I’m gluten free and also have to try and be dairy free too, so being away from home can be tricky when it comes to eating but we had some really nice GF and DF food!

We got lunch from M&S food and Tesco, I had one of their ‘to go’ packs of cocktail sausages (GF and DF) and a pack of kettle chips!

For dinner we had Pizza Express and I had the GF base with tomato sauce, vegan mozzarella and pepperoni and for my first ever GF and DF pizza, it was so lovely!

Bit of a naughty breakfast before we headed home… McDonalds hash browns, they don’t have any gluten or dairy containing ingredients and cross contamination doesn’t pose a major threat (in my opinion) and I have no problem eating these (always research fast food, everyone is different)!

Shrek the Musical

I’m a musical lover so was couldn’t wait to see Shrek the Musical at the Palace Theatre in Manchester! I love the film and didn’t know what to expect from the stage show, but it was so entertaining, great for all ages and I’d highly recommend you try and get tickets while it’s touring!

Old Trafford Stadium Tour

J bought himself a voucher to do this tour and we decided to use it while we were in Manchester!

I’m not a football fan and don’t follow any team but J is a real united fan so he was so excited! The tour was fine for a non-football fan and I did enjoy it but from a real fan, J really loved it and would recommend it if you’re a supporter!

I hope you’ve found this interesting if you’re local to Manchester or have a trip coming up!

What are your favourite things to do in Manchester?

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette – First Impressions and Review

I’ve addressed my addiction to buying and collecting eyeshadow palettes before and I’m pleased to say there is now a new addition to my collection – the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette!

You may be thinking how late to the party I am with this one as this palette is old news to some now, but I wanted to let the hype die down before I made the purchase as I wanted to know if it was worth the money!

I was lucky enough to get this palette for Christmas and I was so excited to finally get my hands on it after dwelling on it for so long!

The packaging is stunning, the velvet/suede feel packaging isn’t something I’ve seen too many other brands do, so this palette looks really nice on display!

The Colours

The shade range was one of the reasons I held back buying this as I was unsure I would get any use out of some of the colours, such as the bold pinks, but the neutral and warm shades were enough to convince me I needed this!

I’ve fallen in love with the shade ‘Tempera’ for brow bone and inner corner highlighting but so far I’d say my hero shade of the palette is ‘Burnt Orange’; this is amazing as both a crease shade and blended all across the lid, depending on what look you want to create.

‘Raw Sienna’ is a great transition colour for the crease and base colour all across the lid.

The Quality

I have tried a lot of eyeshadows and thought I’d found some of the best quality there was to try, but it’s fair to say the pigmentation and quality of the shadows from Anastasia top them all.

The colour pay off on these shades is amazing, the colours come out on the lid so intensely yet thanks to the softness of the quality, they’re so blendable, making them easy to work with and wear.

I’d say I prefer the matte shades slightly more than the shimmers as I think the pigmentation and intensity of colour in the mattes is slightly better and I find those colours easier to work with.

I know you probably don’t need any more encouragement to purchase another eyeshadow palette, but I truly think every makeup lover, both amateur and professional need to purchase this palette!

You can purchase the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette from Beauty Bay for £43.00!

Inside My Current Everyday Makeup Bag

I thought I’d share my current everyday makeup bag with you and the look I’m going for everyday for work, which is a neutral/pink toned look that is super simple and quick to do!

The Products

  • Simple Hydrating Moisturiser
  • NYX Colour Correcting Liquid – Green
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid
  • Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (blemishes)
  • LA GIRL HD Pro Concealer (under eyes)
  • Rimmel Stay Matte Powder
  • MAC Give Me Sun Bronzer
  • Sleek Rose Gold Blush
  • Tanya Burr Champagne Sorbet Powder (as highlight)
  • Eylure X Fleur De Force Brow Powder
  • Violet Voss Holy Grail Powder (‘crystal’ as a brow bone highlight, ‘ploof’ all over the lid)
  • Tarte Maneater Mascara
  • MAC Blankety Lipstick
  • LA GIRL HD Setting Spray

I use the products in that order and I just apply them in a pretty standard way, but here are my top tips for applying this look:

  • Apply Foundation and Concealers with a damp beauty sponge to get a high coverage but fresh/glowy look
  • Apply bronzer with a big duo fibre powder brush for a warmer overall look that is natural and day time appropriate
  • Blend the shade ‘ploof’ across the lid for a natural but pinky look that is ideal for daytime

Here’s what the final look generally looks like that:

I hope you’ve enjoyed this and it’s given you some inspiration for an updated everyday look!

Capsule Makeup Bag: Summer Holiday Edition

Now I really am not one to talk about ‘capsule makeup bags’, because when I pack my makeup bag for even one night away, half my collection usually comes with me, but I do realise that in reality, I do not need all of that.

The ability to create and use a capsule makeup bag is a skill and not one I claim to have, but I have investigated my collection and pulled out the products I think are the key essentials you need for a summer holiday, so I’m going to share with you.

TOP TIP: Only give yourself a small makeup bag, you’ll only be tempted to fill a bigger one!

BASE

Primer – Kiko Colour Correction Fluid – Green

No matter how light you’re trying to pack, Primer is essential so I’d recommend you pack whichever Primer works best for you, which for me is the Kiko colour correcting Primer. I use the green one to help combat redness, especially in warm weather

Foundation – L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Cream

Everyone’s taste in Foundation is different and usually I wouldn’t opt for a BB cream because I like a more full coverage finish, but on holiday, I just want something light and I actually rarely use Foundation so having this product with me is just enough in case I feel I want more coverage.

Concealer – Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer

In my usually day to day makeup routine, I use a few different concealers, but to try and pack light, I’ve chosen one that I think is the best for all the jobs! The Collection lasting perfection concealer has good coverage and is the right shade for both blemishes and under eyes.

Powder – Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – Translucent

I have oily skin so always need powder, soI definitely  need it in the warm weather. I always use the Rimmel stay matte as it’s cheap but good, and it’s translucent so still works as I get a tan.

Bronzer – MAC Mineralize Skin Finish – Give Me Sun

I like to take bronzer with me because it works really well with tanned skin, and this one in particular is very warm toned and works even better with a tanned skin tone.

Blusher – Sleek Blush – Rose Gold

I always like to use blusher to add more colour and warmth to my complexion and when I have a tan, this shade works really well as it’s warm toned and has a slight golden shimmer that goes well with a tan. This is also really small and easy to pack.

Highlighter – Illamasqua Beyond Powder – OMG

Highlighter is an essential when you’ve got a tan as the colour pops so much more. I love the shade of this highlighter anyway and the pigmentation is quite intense which looks great with warm toned skin.

EYES & BROWS

Brows –  Eylure X Fleur De Force Brow Palette – Medium

There’s so many brow products I use and love but when trying to travel light I just pick one I think I can use to create various looks which is why I went for Fleur De Force’s brow palette by Eylure. There’s 2 shades and a highlight in a small palette so it’s easy to pack but can create various looks.

Brow Gel – Anastasia Brow Gel – Clear

I use as many setting and priming products as possible to stop my makeup slipping in the heat and if it’s really hot, even my brow makeup will move. The Anastasia brow gel is a clear gel but it’s so strong and sets brows in place all day. I have a sample size which is perfect for travel.

Brow Concealer – MAC Studio Fix Concealer

No matter how hot the weather is or how light I’m trying to pack, I always take the small MAC cream concealer I use to sharpen my brows. I always need this product to complete my makeup and it’s small and light to pack.

Eye Primer – Urban Decay Primer Potion – Original

I use various different eye primers usually and when I travel I think it important to use one in the heat to keep your eye makeup secure but to pack light, I just bring one. I chose the Urban Decay one as it’s light to pack but also really good and strong.

Eyeshadow – Tanya Burr Eyeshadow Quad – Paradise

Choosing which eyeshadow palette to take was hard, I wanted something small and lightweight but warm toned and easy to create different looks with. I chose the Tanya Burr Paradise palette as it is filled with warm copper shades which are great with a tan, this palette is also affordable so I don’t mind travelling with it.

Mascara – Tarte Maneater Mascara – Black

Mascara is one of the essential items for holiday makeup, it helps brighten your eyes and completes the look. I love this mascara from Tarte as it’s dark and gives a false lash effect.

LIPS

Lip Balm – Vaseline – Rose

I’d consider this one of the most important makeup items ever. I use this during the day when I’m not wearing makeup to stop the sun drying my lips, but I also use it at night for a simple lip look to finish my makeup

Lip Gloss – Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector – 03

I don’t bother with lipsticks on holiday as I find them uncomfortable in the heat, but if I want more than just lip balm, I’ll go for a lip gloss as it goes with a summery makeup look but is still natural. These glosses are so comfortable and this shade is perfect for warm toned skin.

FINISHING

Setting Spray – LA Girl Pro Setting Spray

Using a setting spray to set your makeup on holiday is the best way to make your look last. This LA Girl spray works really well and the bottle is quite small so perfect for travelling.

That may not seem like a ‘capsule makeup bag’, but compared to how many product I would take with me to get ready usually, this is packing very light and I think just the essentials for a full makeup look.

If you’re able to pack even lighter than this (that is definitely possible), share in the comments you essential sunmer holiday makeup products

Top 5 Concealers

I never realised how bad I am when it comes to binge buying concealers, but I think they’re so important to a good makeup look, and I know I’ll always get through them all.

Concealer is a really personal thing but I thought I’d share with you my top 5 concealers, which may be of use if you’re on the lookout for a new one.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer

This is my ultimate favourite concealer, I love it for both blemishes and under eye circles. I use this in the shade fair, but there are 3 shades darker than that. I believe this concealer is £4.19 full price in Boots and Superdrug. It is really good coverage and blends out flawlessly.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer

I’d heard so much about this concealer and how amazing it was for blemishes, but the shade I bought was way too light for that. I like layering this with a slightly more natural concealer for under eyes and it adds really good coverage and highlights really nicely. I also think this works great for applying to the top of the cheekbones to brighten. This concealer is £19.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

This is probably my favourite higher end concealer, it really does what it says, it’s extremely ‘radiant’ and brightening, making it amazing for under eyes, and creamy, meaning it blends so easily. This is really good coverage and they have such a good colour range. £23.

LA Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer

I’d say this is up there with my favourite ‘all round’ concealers. It is amazing for under eyes, blemishes, redness, and even highlighting/ brightening the face. The coverage is amazing and it blends so nicely. It has a really nice glow to it as well. I purchased mine from Beauty Bay as we don’t have this brand in store in the UK, it was £5 and comes in so many shades.

MAC Studio Finish Concealer

The only time I use a cream concealer like this is to sharpen and neaten my brows and this is why I love this one. It’s a really soft, high coverage concealer and works really well with a pointed concealer brush to sharpen my brows and it then blends out really nicely. This also comes in a lot of shades, and is £16.

I hope this has been useful if you’re after a new concealer, let me know your favourite concealers as I’d love to try them.

High End VS Budget Makeup Look

I’ve seen this trend all over the internet and decided to put it to the test myself.

The idea is to do a makeup look with budget products on one side of the face and the same look using high end products on the other side of the face.

The idea is to find affordable dupes for high end products, find budget products that apply and last as well as high end products and generally prove not all amazing makeup has to cost a fortune.

I created 2 faces of makeup, one budget and one high end and applied them to different sides of my face.

The budget look came to £108.80 and the high end makeup was worth £317.

I was really nervous about wearing this look all day in case they didn’t match well but I think it went really well and I felt happy wearing it all day.

I primed my whole face the same using Superdrug Vitamin E Radiancr Moisture Cream and NYX Colour Correcting Primer in Green.

I then set both sides with Urban Decay All Nightet spray to give them an even chance.

This is the look I created, a basic everyday makeup look for me.

This picture was when I first applied all the makeup!

I found both sides of the look wore equally throughout the day, which I was really surprised about.

The following pictures were taken a few hours apart, throughout the day, and as you can see, it is fading equally.

Overall, I had preferences from both sides of the look, which I have now added into my everyday routine.

I liked both the bases equally, which shows you don’t need to spend hundreds to get good skin makeup. I preferred the brows done with the MAC powder, I felt the shape was better and the colour stayed stronger throughout the day. I actually preferred the Maybelline mascara and am now using that everyday again. I couldn’t believe how similar the lip products were, especially the liners.

I was so happy I did this test, it definitely changed my everyday makeup routine.

If you would like to see my current everyday routine, or how I adapt my routine when I have my spray tan, let me know as I’d love to share those posts.

Collection Lasting Perfect Colour Correctors

Collection Lasting Perfect Colour Correctors – Available at Boots and Superdrug

IMG_1778[1]

I think it’s fair to say that the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer is one of the most talked about concealers on the internet and for a very good reason.

I have loved that concealer for years, it is so high coverage, easy to blend and long-lasting. I use shade 1, fair, on both spots and my under eyes and I can never fault it.

They have also recently changed the packaging to last better and feel better quality.

Collection has recently launched 3 colour correctors in the same formula and packaging as the concealer and I had to have them.

They have brought out 3 shades which are available in Boots and Superdrug

Green – to cover redness (ideal for blemishes)

Lemon – to cover purple tones and brighten (perfect for under eyes)

Lilac – to cover yellow tones

IMG_1798[1]

IMG_1789[1]

They all have the same consistency and feel as the concealer so I’m anticipating they’ll blend as well as the concealer does.

I purchased these for £3.99 each in boots which I think was a special offer, I assume they’ll be £4.19 full price like the concealer.

I found too much of the green corrector made in unblendable so best to go sparingly with this. It isn’t to be used all over but on specific blemishes. I have a green primer I found worked better for covering the whole skin.

I tested the lemon corrector and found it did help reduce the appearance of under eye circles, especially once paired with the concealer.

I’d love to use these in a future post alongside some other colour correcting products to do a ‘guide to colour correction’, let me know if you’d be interested.

If you try these, I’d love to know how you find them.

Tanya Burr Cosmetics – ‘Neutral Ambience’ Collection

Tanya Burr Cosmetics –  ‘Neutral Ambience’ collection – available instore at Superdrug – 15th May 2017

IMG_1712[1]

There’s something so exciting about new product releases from blogger’s, whether that’s because they’re held top secret for so long or because we just love to see people in this industry doing well.

Tanya Burr has been releasing makeup products for a while now and she regularly releases small collections and her most recent release is the ‘Neutral Ambience’ range.

This collection has a real spring/summer feel to it, a lot of rose gold tones but in general, a very neutral (what a surprise), wearable collection.

This collection features 2 new eyeshadow palettes and 2 new lipsticks.

All products are already available for order on the Superdrug website.

IMG_1765[1].JPG

I always love the packaging of Tanya’s products, all though I can’t wait for the day that the eyeshadow packaging feels as high quality as the lipsticks and lipglosses as they still feel slightly cheaper in the cardboard packaging.

The Products

My Escape Eyeshadow Palette

IMG_1767[1]IMG_1766[1]

This is the darker of the two palettes, with three dark shades and just one light, shimmery shade.

This palette would be better for night time makeup in my opinion.

£5.99 at Superdrug

My Paradise Eyeshadow Palette

IMG_1768[1]IMG_1769[1]

This is the lighter and more shimmery of the two palettes, i’d say it’s suitable for both day and evening.

The general tone is rose gold and all the shades are quite similar, they blend really well.

If you carry on packing the shadow on to the lid, you can get a nice colour pay off.

£5.99 at Superdrug

IMG_1770[1]IMG_1771[1]

Bear Hug Lipstick

IMG_1773[1]

Bear Hug is the lighter of the two shades, it is more of an orangey toned nude so if you favour those sort of colours then this is your best option out of the two.

I love the formula of Tanya Burr lipstcks, they’re really soft and creamy, I’d say they’re most similar to MAC’s creamsheen formula.

The packaging feels really high end as well, it’s quite weighted which I think makes them seem really luxuorious.

£6.99 at Superdrug

Sunday Walk Lipstick

IMG_1772[1]

I find that Sunday Walk lipstick suits me best out of the two, it’s a darker, more pinky nude which compliments my pale skintone better.

Again, the formula is the same so really comfortable to wear.

I also love the size of the bullet for these lipsticks, it’s the perfect shape so I find them so easy to apply.

£6.99 at Superdrug

I hope you all found this post helpful if you were considering purchasing any of the collection, it’s all really lovely, perfect for the current season and so affordable.

If you’d like to see photographs or here my opinion on any other blogger beauty products then let me know and I’ll try to get my hands on them.

ORGANISING MY PRO KIT

Hey guys,

First of all, I’m sorry for the lack of posts over here but I had a bit of a “writer’s block” and I didn’t want to post content that I didn’t love or feel was interesting.

Anyway, today I thought it would be fun to do a post about how I’ve started to organise and put together my first ‘pro kit’, I want to start doing some mobile work now I’ve finished my first year of training and for that I need an easy to transport pro kit with everything I need in it. I thought I’d share my top tips for organising a pro kit and also my essentials to keep with you if you’re doing hair, makeup or beauty. My kit is still a work in progress but I just wanted to share my tips from what I’ve experienced so far. I also know I’m not a professional yet but I’m doing my best to build up a clientele. I’m currently just doing family and the occasional friend while I’m arranging my insurance as I want to do everything properly 🙂

TOP TIPS:

  • I personally use a cabin size, hard suitcase for my kit, it’s early days and this was the most affordable option for me but I have seen a lot of well established makeup artists doing the same as it’s easy to transport and has loads of room. You can buy specialist beauty/makeup trollies or i’ve heard of people using wheel toolboxes but this was my preferred way. My suitcase is the hard, silver, four wheeled cabin size suitcase from IT Luggage, I got it for £30 at matalan!!
  • LOTS OF MAKEUP BAGS!! Although using a suitcase it a great way to transport everything, it can be hard to organise. My suitcase has two equal sides, I have my hair stuff on one side and makeup in the other. I bought loads and loads of black, shiny makeup bags from poundland to organise my makeup, I have brushes in one, base products in another, lip products in another etc etc and everything is so organised. Having all the black makeup bags, that can be wiped clean easily looks so professional in my opinion.
  • KEEPING IT SECURE! If you like the suitcase idea, get a suitcase with straps or mesh that can be zipped up to secure your things to stop anything breaking. One side of my suitcase has a net over the top that can be zipped up and the other side has the classic suitcase elasticated straps!

CHECK LIST:

  • box of tissues
  • cotton wool pads
  • cotton wool buds
  • cleansing water/makeup remover
  • client cards
  • brush cleanser
  • towel/cutting collar/gown

this is my current set up(not the best picture, taken off my instagram @makeupbyellieex)

So just a short post on organising my pro kit, hope its been helpful to some of you!! Let me know what you want to see next!!

that’s all for now,
